About this Item

Very Good in a Very Good dust jacket. First Edition/First Printing/First Issue THUS. The first five titles, including H.M.S. Surprise, in the Aubrey-Maturin series were published in both the UK and US. No subsequent titles were issued until Norton published the Letter of Marque in 1990. The first US appearance for the remaining novels (from The Fortune of War through The Reverse of the Medal), was in 1994 as part of the Norton Uniform Edition. This is the true first edition/first printing of the Norton Uniform Edition with the $22.50 price on the dust jacket (later issues show $24.00 or no price on the dust jacket), a first printing indicated by the number line down to "1, the list of titles through "The Wine Dark Sea" on the copyright page, and "11-94" on the rear dust jacket panel. Buff colored spine with "III" at the bottom. The book is Very Good with just some minor spine lean and a hint of soiling to the top edge of the text block. The text is clean and bright and the text block is tight. The mylar protected dust jacket is Very Good with minor shelf wear. Overall a very attractive copy of the first Norton Uniform edition of this title. EXTREMELY SCARCE. We grade our books very conservatively to insure your satisfaction. Photos available on request. About this title

"Few, very few books have made my heart thud with excitement. H.M.S. Surprise managed it."―Helen Lucy Burke, Irish Press

Third in the series of Aubrey/Maturin adventures, this book is set among the strange sights and smells of the Indian subcontinent, and in the distant waters ploughed by the ships of the East India Company. Aubrey is on the defensive, pitting wits and seamanship against an enemy enjoying overwhelming local superiority. But somewhere in the Indian Ocean lies the prize that could make him rich beyond his wildest dream: the ships sent by Napoleon to attack the China Fleet...

The stakes are high as HMS Surprise opens, and actor Robert Hardy's sterling reading never lets you forget them. Hardy makes Patrick O'Brian's third novel of high-seas adventure--written in 1973 and set mainly in 1805 on the waters surrounding India and the Orient--seem as immediate as an overdrawn checking account. Money plays a big role, and Captain Jack Aubrey stands to make a lot of it. All he has to do is find Napoleon's fleet--and take their gold away from them. (Running time: three hours, two cassettes) --Lou Schuler
