No has any other artists of the period so captured the imagination of later generations. This catalogue is laid out in the manner of a scholarly museum catalogue. The paintings are placed in chronological order as far as possible. Works which only survive as copies and misattributions are set out in the appendices. The third section (Analecta) contains nine chapters dealing with the primary historical, stylistic, technical and artistic aspects of the subject, and the question of content. The book is then rounded off by a Status questions of documents and sources, a bibliography and indices.
