About this Item

Single volume--six issues bound without covers and advertisements. Small quarto, 9 3/4" tall, 816 pages, three-quarter leather over black cloth. A very good, hard cover with minor shelf wear over all, boards scuffed at the bottom edges and the top and bottom leather edges of the back strip, fore-corner tips worn through to boards, front cover cloth discolored, hinges cracked but secure and binding solid, paper lightly yellowed, previous owner's name on the front endpaper. This is the publisher's edition, printed from the original plates and includes all of the editorial material (articles, stories, poetry, etc.) of the separate issues but lacks the advertisements and individual covers. It was the practice of the time for most of the better literary magazines to issue such editions before melting down the original printers' plates. Note: ''Harper's Magazine' began publication in 1850 and recreated the American magazine, serving as a promotional vehicle for Harper and Brothers books as well as the new 'literary' fiction and essay of the time, using sophisticated illustration and the best authors. Subject matters range from art, fiction, and poetry to history and science. As such it makes a terrific read as an anthology of its moment in time. An excellent resource. Three-quarter leather over cloth. Bookseller Inventory # 20484

Store Description

After thirty years, our Newbury Street shop in Boston has closed and our stock is now available only on-line. Our efforts have always been directed toward good reading copies, but we still have a large selection of first editions and scarce titles. We continue to specialize in all areas of fiction, giving added attention to science fiction and mystery. Our largest non-fiction selection is in history, with emphasis on America and Britain. Though we have always been a general bookseller, with over 250 subject categories to chose from, we maintain strong departments in biography, poetry, drama, essay and music as well.
