"A Wedding in Fernwald, " the displaced persons camp, was written by the celebrated left wing Yiddish poet and novelist H. Leivick (Leivick Halpern) (1888-1962) , a member of the Bund in 1905 and escapee from Siberia in 1913, he worked for many years as a wallpaper hanger in New York, and obtained considerable fame worldwide as a Yiddish poet and playwright. Leivick traveled to Germany with a Holocaust survivor in 1946 in order to provide words of encouragement to survivors living in displaced persons (DP) camps. At Fernwald, he witnessed the first wedding between two survivors and told the survivors that "A Jew is stronger than the crematoriums, stronger than gas chambers. You must find peace within yourselves. Through inner peace we will all be healed. " His play Di Hasene in Fernvald came out of that experience. Subjects: Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) - Poetry.
