About this Item

HEAD OF THE ARKANSAS, FREMONT PASS, near Leadville, COLORADO, 1882. Original mammoth-sized (21 inches by 17 inches) albumen photographic print. Excellent tones and contrasts, exhibiting variations of "eggplant-skin-like" darker colors. Although W. H. Jackson was more regularly employed by The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, this image appears to have been taken along the tracks of the Denver, South Park & Pacific Railroad. The destination of both railroads in this region of Colorado was Leadville where a magnificent silver boom was in progress. In capturing this image on a glass-plate negative, Jackson intended to exhibit to Eastern investors that the Rocky Mountain wilderness was being tamed by humankind's significant endeavors. Mammoth print is framed in a museum conservation manner and protected behind UV glass. Bookseller Inventory # 000082
