First Edition, FIRST PRINTING. 5.5" x 8.25". 432 pages. This amazing book is full of stories told by Kid Ory, Bunk Johnson, Joe Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Clarence Williams, Jelly Roll Morton, Fletcher Henderson, W.C. Handy, Fats Walker, Ethel Waters, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck and many others. Book is in NEAR FINE condition with black textured cloth binding with bold pink and white lettering on spine. Spine tips, corners and edges are untouched. Dust Jacket is in VERY GOOD+ condition with pink illustration of men playing trumpet and sax on black front cover and white smaller illustration of man playing sax on top half of black back cover. Jacket is covered by Brodart with corners and bottom spine tips bumped and gently worn and top spine tips and top edges having creases and thin tears and there is one 1/4" x 1/4" chip missing from top edge of back cover. Side edges of spine and outside of covers show thin lines of wear. Mild rubbing on Brodart cover mostly evident on black back cover. Book is INSCRIBED ". with all good wishes -- Nat, August 1955" It is not clear if this is Nat Shapiro or Nat Hentoff.kind of a mystery! Book is in exceptional condition especially for 60 years old.
