3 volumes. Second edition, same year as the first issue, and best edition with a new 50 page introduction. Illustrated with a large folding map (bound into Vol.1 as called for), and two tinted and two coloured lithographic plates with 3 engraved vignette title pages including the coloured lithographed dedication page. 8vo, original publisher’s cloth, decorated in blind in arabesque designs on the covers and spines, each volume lettered in gilt. lxviii, 419; xii, 425 (ads); xii, 432, 32 ads pp. A rare original clothbound copy of this highly elusive and important work. Internally, each volume is tight, clean, unpressed and fine, all plates and the map are very well preserved, each volume has been rebacked incorporating the original spine panel, wear to spines, otherwise the bindings are in quite pleasing condition. RARE AND IMPORTANT CORNERSTONE WORK IN AFRICANA. Very scarce in the original cloth. Our copy also retains the original half-titles and publisher’s ads. Harris was the head of the mission sent by the British Government to open up relations with the Ancient Christian Kingdom of Shoa in the Ethiopian highlands. His success in this pursuit earned him a knighthood. He was as well, one of the earliest explorers to penetrate the highland country. This is one of the most important of all books in general Africana and a cornerstone of any collection of books on Africa. The second edition is generally recognized as being better than the first with its 90 pages of additional material. In addition, the dedication to the queen is sometimes not found in other editions.
