4 volumes (complete), octavo, original speckled paper over boards with old manuscript spine labels, l, 493; vi, 553; vi, 497; vi, 500 pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author in first volume. All half-titles present. The masterwork of the Spanish priest and historian Juan Antonio Llorente (1756-1823). At time of publication Llorente had been living in France for a number of years - having identified with the French (Bonaparte) when the alliance between Spain and France collapsed in 1808. The work was first published in 1817 (in French, a Spanish edition was not published until 1822). Palau 145349 ("Una de las mejores y más bien documentadas historias de la Inquisición española.") Boards scuffed and worn, joints splitting, cracking to paper over spine, bookplate to pastedown of first volume, scattered foxing, stain to upper spine corner of last 20 or so pages in 4th volume. Our business is now conducted online, by appointment, and at the approximately 8 antiquarian bookfairs at which we exhibit annually. Orders usually ship within 2 business days. US orders are shipped BY Priority Mail, Media Mail, OR UPS ($5-$12 on most single title orders).
INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS PLEASE NOTE: Foreign orders are shipped at cost. International surface mail is not offered by the US Postal Service; all orders are shipped by air. We utilize the $30.00 Priority Mail International flat-rate mailer (4 lbs maximum weight) when we can adequately protect the book within. Oversize books will in most cases cost a minimum of $50.00 to ship overseas. The ABE default shipping rates are based on orders for 1 book at a maximum weight of 2.2 pounds. In many cases (large books, sets, insurance) this does not reflect the actual shipping cost. We will request additional shipping compensation through the Abebooks system when necessary.
