[EN] Although at the time Prince Duarte (Edward) arised much sympathy among the Portuguese and other nations his history has been completely forgotten. Duarte de Bragança (1605-1649) son of Theodosius II, Duke of Bragança, and brother of the future King John IV of Portugal left the kingdom in 1634 to serve the Emperor Ferdinand III, Holy Roman Emperor, in the Thirty Years War. In 1638 he visited Portugal when he was asked to take command of the uprise that would lead to the restoration of independence. When the news arrived in Germany he wrote to the brother (on January 12, 1641) to telling him that he would return to the kingdom so that he could. But Spain got his arrest through the diplomatic channels and the emperor held the prince in the fortress of Passau, and later in the fortress of Graz in southern Austria. D. John IV ordered the ambassadors to use every means to free his brother and sought help from Pope Innocent XII unsuccessful. D. Duarte was sold to the Spanish and ended at the castle of Milan, where he died after eight years of captivity, on September 3, 1649.
