Nicely bound in contemporary stiff vellum with the end papers renewed. The text is quite crisp, with no markings or foxing. Provenance: Ex-libris of Robert S. Pirie. The first edition of this early work by Heylyn. With the added engraved title page by William Marshall. Nicely bound with five ties in contemporary stiff vellum with the end papers renewed. The text is quite crisp, with no markings or foxing. Provenance: Ex-libris of Robert S. Pirie. The first edition of this early work by Heylyn. His best known work is his Cosmographie (1652) which is commonly noted today for an omission first commented on by John Ward, vicar of Stratford-upon-Avon, who writes in one of his notebooks, dated 1652, noting, and wondering why, Peter Heylyn did not include Shakespeare among the dramatic poets in his Cosmographie in 4 bookes (London, 1652). In a modernized translation: “Whether Dr. Heylin does well in reckoning up the dramatic poets which have been famous in England, to omit Shakespeare.” In fact, a previous owner has added a light penciled notation on the front blank of this copy: Drayton ref. p 296.
