8vo - over 7 - 9" tall. Classic 13 volume set with the first 8 being by Hume and the 5 volume continuation from Smollett. All books are bound (same size) in once handsome full tree calf with gilt decorated spines and black moroccan labels. Now about 1/2 labels are missing, spines are flaky with many hinges fragile though none detached, all edges dyed yellow. Contains the following publishing dates all done by Cadell; V1-1790, 2-1792, 3-1792, 4-1793, 5-1792, 6-1793, 7-1793, 8-1793, 9-1793, 10-1793, 11-1793, 12-1794, 13-1793. Contents illustrated with many engraved portrait plates including both Hume and Smollett. Interiors very clean with only the smallest bit of pencil marginalia found. Ex Libris (bookplates inside front boards) Alfred Waterhouse, owner of the tea company Dakin & Co. and one of the first to make use of the telegraph between his offices.
