About this Item

Three frontispiece portraits in volumes two and three The French Romantic poet's most important prose work. "The Histoire des Girondins, started in 1843, was partially an expedient to parry financial pressures; it was also a means to win political adherents. By the time of its publication in eight volumes in 1847, Lamartine had behind him a powerful following." After a brief period of power after the February Revolution of 1848, general fear of his leftist leanings led to a period of decline and indebtedness from which he never recovered. Dampmarking on one volume, general fading and dust soil , small tears and rubbing on lower tips. Intermittent foxing but a sound set in original cloth. 1st US edition. Binding is cloth.
