II both covers together with front blank pages present but detached as is most of leather spine strip without title label; name of owner Joseph B. Felts in old hand inked on front blank page (possibly author of History of Ipswich, Essex, and Hamilton; 1834); pages with plain edges, text blocks of both volumes secure, very tight without cracks. With frontis portrait in vol. 1 of John Winthrop (without tissue guard) with foxing outside portrait¿; Preface in vol. I followed by facsimile of title page, dedication, and preface of ¿former edition¿ (1790), and then by bound-in Errata sheet and bound-in half-sheet with brief notes from Adam Winthrop and William Winthrop dated 29 September 1807.; at end Appendix (pp. 335-424). In vol. II fold-out ¿Facsimile of Part of a Letter from Gov. Winthrop to his Wife¿ facing title page with shadow and print rubbed onto title page. Very good condition for their age 1825/1826.; edges, corners, and covers of book show minor wear. No underlining; no highlighting; no internal markings. All edges marbled. Frontis with tissue guards intact. All hinges straight and tight; no internal markings. Foxing to front and rear 10 pages or so of each volume. Ownership markings on title page of each volume "Estate of robt W. Weir / Henry C. Weir" Volume I title page has a 50-cent piece open tear where apparently the name of an owner prior to Weir was torn away. Natural tan calf spines and tips over brown marbled paper-covered boards. Showing its age at head/heel of leather spines and at leather tips. First edition of a significant milestone in New England History. In 1945, a previous bookseller priced this set at $245.00.
