At the time the Waggoner Ranch was one of the largest ranches in Northwest Texas. Masterson's "The JY Cattle Brand" tells of some of the history of his father's JY cattle brand and relates some of his experiences as a cowboy on his father's ranch. The history of the J Buckle Ranch was written by Jesse Dyer in 1941 as a Master's thesis at the West Texas State College.
