About this title

Synopsis:

Upon his return from service, Vietnam veteran Thomas Joseph Hollaran finds that his wife has left him, his home town, Newark, New Jersey, is disintegrating, and only his buddy Eddie can help him get through

From Library Journal:

Tom Hollaran has been back from Vietnam for over a year, but readjusting to Elizabeth, New Jersey, has left his mind stretched between two psychiatrists. The imaginary swirl of helicopter blades is as constant as his hatred for the wife who betrayed him while he was overseas, and he rapidly slides down the JS & T Steel employment ladder from salesman to fired. Acting within a familiar post-Vietnam plot, Tom predictably has a confused love affair and helps in a fellow vet's exotic plan to ``get the Bozos.'' Despite its lamentably stale plot, this first novel shows considerable narrative achievement. A machine-gun styleshort prose bursts stitching together longer volleysbrilliantly evokes the rhythm of Hollaran's thoughts. This stylistic accomplishment makes Hollaran's World War stand out among the novels in this burgeoning genre. Paul E. Hutchison, English Dept., Pennsylvania State Univ., University Park
