FIRST EDITION. LIMITED TO 1000 COPIES. 8vo. (23 cm.) [10]i-iii[3]1-203p. Profusely illustrated with b/w photos, drawings and one map. Decorative endpapers. Colophon notes limitiation to 1000 copies, designed by Merle Armitage, printing by Lynton R. Kistler, and binding by C. Frank Fox. Blue cloth decorated in black and gilt. Presentation inscription reads as follows: Presented January 31st, 1938,/ to the/ winner of the impromptu/ musical evening held by the/ Mus-Art Club of Los Angeles, at/ the Park-Wilshire Hotel./ by/ Chairman of Musical directorship/ Sylvia S. Rudelson." Also signed by President Jack Kirny[?] beneath the inscription. Written on the front pastedown is a poem entitled "A Symphony Under the Stars" by Sophia Papp in her hand and with the handwritten notation below it "First Prize--1938". Laid in is a 4 x 6" white card on the front of which is written the following: "Dear Miss Pearlman:/ I am sorry I could not send you/ your book before this and I hope you/ will forgive me. I enjoyed the book/ immensely. Thank you very much for/ your kindness./ Yours very sincerely/ Sophia Papp." Rocq #3506. Isabel Morse Jones was Music Editor for the Los Angeles Times and was the press representative for the Hollywood Bowl, where she assisted Hollywood Bowl founder Artie Mason Carter. Sophia Papp was also a member of the American Hungarian Junior League(1940) and Sylvia S. Rudelson was a young Jewish amateur pianist.
