THREE VOLUMES. 4to. 10 x 12.25 inches. Text in double columns. Bound in original navy morocco, gilt with blind stamped and gilt borders to boards and inner dentelles; Spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt with contrasting morocco title labels. All edges gilt. Slight wear to extremities but otherwise a very fine set. Family register of William Paterson Canterbury 1862 with overleaf details in ink of Paterson and Clements families from 1838-1887, contuing on recto of frontispiece for 1917. Illustrated by c.71 plates, including 4 maps, one double page view of modern Jerusalem, with key, portrait frontispiece, 3 engraved vignette titles and one engraved family register page at front. The edition of the Bible with Scott's commentary proved very popular throughout the nineteenth century and appeared in a number of formats. This revised edition is undated and the suggested publication dates of 1842-44 are taken from University of Aberdeen 's entry for the three volume edition in COPAC. Thomas Scott (1747-1821), the son of a Lincolnshire farmer, was ordained in 1772 and held a number of livings in Bucks and London. His four volume Bible with Commentary first appeared 1788-92. It was revised by William Symington (1795-1862), born in Paisley who was ordained in 1819 and inducted to the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Glasgow in 1839. His Introductory Essay displays a marked anti-Roman Catholic bias including a rejection of the canonical authority of the Apocrypha. The Family Register at the front shows this set to have been owned by William Paterson of Canterbury (1838-1921). A handsomely bound three volume Bible in fine condition.
