The paper quite fresh and fine with only very minor light foxing occasionally present and far less then typically encountered. With the general title and one of the divisional title-pages included, that for section three, which along with section three's preliminary material is bound in the front. The three page 'notice of the journey', the list of subjects for parts one and two, and the three pages of introductory text to section 2 are not included. VERY EARLY ISSUE OF THE QUARTO EDITION WITH 120 PLATES REPRODUCED FROM One of the most desirable of all travel and plate books. Roberts' original folio volumes from the 1840 rank among the most costly of illustrated travel books. Their popularity let to the production of a series of more affordable quarto volumes, of which the volume offered here is one. In the course of two and a half months in 1838, traveling some 800 miles south from Cairo, Roberts recorded the monumental temple sites along the Nile in more than a hundred sketches. He headed on to to Petra and Mount Sinai, and then throughout the Holy Land and the areas of historical and religious importance which were held sacred to Christians, Jews and Muslims alike. As the first British artist to sketch the monuments of Ancient Egypt, set on "Plains so vast.that, until you come near them, you have no idea of their magnificence," Roberts was well aware of the stir his drawings would create in London. According to John Ruskin, writing in PRAETERITA, Roberts's drawings "were the first studies ever made conscientiously by an English painter, not to exhibit his own skill, but to give true portraiture of scenes of historical and religious interest.".
