About this Item
8vo. publisher's cloth. frontispiece, A sample book for this publication. Minor soiling and rubbing, else a very good copy. Salesman's dummies (also called Canvassing books) were a means that publishers in the 19th century and early 20th century used to reach the reading public in the areas that would not have had easy access to a bookstore. The sample books were then taken around, door-to-door, to secure orders for the books portrayed. The various types of bindings are displayed on the front and rear inside covers, along with samples of illustrations (sometimes in color) and text. The practice of subscription selling died out in the 1930's, although some companies continued well into the last half of the twentieth century. Seller Inventory # 140792
