About this Item

This copy ia a very unusual uncorrected proof copy. Signed by John Irving above his name on the full title page. It's bound in a printed red cover that the finished book had. Back cover is a plain simple card board stock paper with out text. Spine is simply glued together. All you see is the pages and white glue. No text. First page in is the half title page with the statement uncorrected proof. Text appears to be badly photo copied. Not centered. Some of the pages 196- 300 are smeared or printed very light. A few pages are tipped in. Loose. Front cover and first page in (The half title page) is split at the bottom edge. Holding together with rest of text but it's a 2 inch split. A few loose pages.Front cover is rubbed. As we all know Mr. Irving doesn't take kindly to signing books. He hates it. I only wonder what he thought when he was presented with this copy for his signature. But he did sign it! One of a kind? Probably. Bookseller Inventory # 001634

About this title

Synopsis:

THE HOTEL NEW HAMPSHIRE follows the Berry family across two continents and through three hotels. Family members attract friends who substitute lust, violence, laughter and tears for the standard bourgeois components. The author makes us ask, "Is that a tragedy?"

"A novel of outrageous exuberance and heartrending love...Irving clashes hilarity and heartbreak together like cymbals to bring us to attention." (American Way)

"Exotic characters...fantastic events...a hectic gaudy saga with the verve of a Marx Brothers movie." (The New York Times)
