About this Item

241 pages. Autobiography of a French protestant condemned to the galleys of France for the sake of his religion. Two title pages, the first in English, the second title page in French dated at Amsterdam 1757. This book was first translated from French to English, London 1758, by Oliver Goldsmith, under the pseudonym John Willington. Goldsmith was author of The Vicar of Wakefield, The Deserted Village, and many other great works of literature. Pages are damp wrinkled. Light foxing to text block edges. Brown endpapers. Previous owner's name penciled on front flyleaf. 12mo. Brown cloth with gilt title and ornament inside gilt frame on front cover. Gilt lettering and decoration on spine.
