Item description from seller

In Hebrew. 80 pages. 176 x 124 mm. Rabbi Aaron Marcus (January 13, 1843 Hamburg - February 5, 1916 (age 73) Frankfurt ) was a writer , author, linguist, and one of the founders of the Zionist movement in Galicia. He wrote under the pen name Verus. e of Contents. Lost his parents when he was a child and was raised by his grandmother. He studied with Rabbi Baruch Yitzchak Lipshitz. He also studied languages (including ancient languages), philosophy and general studies. He moved to Eastern Europe and settled in Krakow (then in Galicia , in the Austro-Hungarian Empire , now Poland ), where he became a Radomsk Hasid and one of the disciples of Rabbi Shlomo HaCohen Rabinowitz. He earned his living as an accountant and merchant of Carmel Mizrachi wines. This book is a chapter in his book Hasidism (1901) in German. It is his most famous book, in which he presents Hasidism and its teachings to Western Jews in Western terms. The book contains a wealth of information, some of them first-hand, and insights on the Hasidic movement. Aharon Marcus was one of the first Zionists in Galicia. Together with Rabbi Shimon Sofer, he established the "Rosh Pina" organization, in order to consolidate the national movement in the city and the Association for the Settlement of the Land of Israel. The "Rosh Pina" organization was later considered the first Zionist organization in Krakow. He served as a delegate to the first Zionist Congress, and even sat on the presidential stage. At that time he corresponded with Theodore Herzl and Max Nordau and even began to issue a Zionist journal in German, Krakauer Judische Zeitung , which was published in 1898 to the beginning of 1900. In his response to the words of the Chief Rabbi of Vienna, Dr. Moshe Gidemann, who spoke out against the Zionist movement, Herzl mentions and quotes Marcus: "The settlement movement was created more than fifty years ago, mostly in ultra-Orthodox circles by leading rabbis”… Aaron Marcus writes elsewhere about the political revival of Judaism. Herzl stated that Aaron Marcus, who resides in Podgorze, should be trusted. He himself is a "Hassid" and he has written a wonderful book about the new philosophy. He is "doesn’t make a living out of Judaism" - as our friend Leon Kellner says - "he lives for Judaism." Following the First Zionist Congress, Marcus tried to create a front of rabbis and Admorim from Galicia, Bukovina, Poland and Russia, including the Czortkow Rebbe, who were willing to begin negotiations on joining the Zionist Organization. In March 1900, following Herzl's lack of response to the meeting with the Czortkow Rebbe, Marcus left the Zionist Organization angrily. This was a fateful missed opportunity in the history of Zionism and Eastern European Jewry.…
