Description:

(FT) Clothbound. 4to. 64, [6], [36] pages. 32 cm. In Hebrew and English. Decorative brown raised cloth over boards, with gilt title, and copper plate depicting a topographic relief view of Israel. Plates printed on separate paper and mounted on leaves. With decorative endpages and text printed in red and black ink. From the title page: "17 illustrations in colour by A. Allweil, an essay by Max Brod and an accompanying text by I. M. Lask. With a revised English translation and copious explanatory notes by Joseph Loewy and Joseph Guens. " This deluxe edition of the Haggadah with illustrations by Allweil was printed in limited numbers in five runs throughout the early 1950s until the early 1970s, this being one of the earliest editions, though no date is given in the book itself. Galician-born Ariel Allweil immigrated to Palestine in 1920, and became the first leader of the socially radical kibbutz Bitanya. The commune was known for its intensely socialist lifestyle, with all members working together daily and meeting nightly to share their thoughts and struggles regarding the new world they were trying to forge. It was during his time with Bitanya that Allweil fully began to explore his creativity and decided to become an artist. His superb woodcuts celebrate Jewish history and community at a time when the Zionist dream had not yet been fulfilled. He designed two other Haggadahs, one for the Kibbutz he lived on in the 1930s, and an edition for the Israeli Defence Forces in the early 1950s. He later taught painting and graphic arts in Israel. This Haggadah is beautifully illustrated with commentaries which immediately situate the importance and practice of Passover during the time of the creation of Israel amidst wars in the late 1940s, and the illustrations similarly depict both Israeli soldiers and biblical themes. Subjects: Haggadah - Commentaries. Seder - Liturgy - Texts. Judaism - Liturgy - Texts. Alvail, A. (Aryeh) . Haggadah - Illustrations. Jacket worn. Internally very fresh. Very good condition. (HAG-7-28). Bookseller Inventory #

"About 47 years ago a handful of God-fearing men and women, much concerned over the lack of Jewish educational facilities for the youth of America, banded together and organized this, our OHEL TORAH. It was a tremendous task they had undertaken - their ranks were thin, and their resources much thinner. After great personal sacrifices and years of effort they built what is now an EAST SIDE INSTITUTION - our OHEL TORAH - an institution well known to New York Jewry not alone for its teaching of the Torah, but for its inculcating into American Jewish youth a love, understanding, and above all observance of the Torah. " Yeshivot, Matzo companies, Sausage Facitories, banks, and other businesses would distribute hagadoth specially printed for them with their own outer wrappers; this copy has the wrappers for Yeshivas Ohel Torah.
