About this title

Hagen is a character from Wagner’s Ring Cycle, a mythological villain bred for evil in order to attain immense power for his manipulative father. In Chris Boerger’s novel of the same name, the title character is a meditative fighting dog who strives for nobility and valor despite having been raised amid almost constant ruthlessness and violence. The novel alternates points of view between Hagen and his volatile trainer, an Iraq War veteran and heavy metal guitarist and marijuana courier named Jason Chillblain, both of them outcasts and products of a troubled upbringing, and each fulfilling some need in the other while palliating his loneliness. These sad brutes exist in a world of menace and adrenaline, Jason proud of his champion for his victories in the pit, which he exploits, and Hagen respectful toward his master in spite of the man’s personal failures, his lack of affinity with his own kind. They navigate their environment with a standoffish fatalism that threatens to escalate into self-destructiveness. Other characters of note are Jason’s Uncle Mitch, an unrepentant nihilist who raises pit bulls and grows marijuana, Jason’s fellow courier Richelle Katz, an amateur bodybuilder who wants to take it to the professional level so she can escape the sordidness of her environment, and Richelle’s companion Ziggy, a shelter dog who like Hagen is a bull terrier but unlike him is sensitive and domesticated and pacifistic. When Hagen nearly dies in the pit after one of his most hard-won triumphs, his master retires him to a life of studding and for a time it looks as if they might at last be able to put the violence behind them. But a series of betrayals threatens to upend everything, betrayal within the marijuana business, in Jason’s personal life, followed by the deepest betrayal of all, between man and dog. These events are delineated without pity and linked by an undercurrent of escalating tragedy. Hagen is a humane novel about inhumanity, one that raises the question, are certain types of people, and for that matter breeds of dog, born to violence or bred for it? By focusing on the Hagens and Jasons and Richelles of the world, it casts its lot with the dispossessed and misunderstood and without any regrets.
