The Haight~Ashbury movement of 1965~67 ~named after a run~down Victorian neighborhood in San Francisco, which became its home~ was one of the most written about and discussed events of the late sixties. Everyone recognized that something frightening, amusing or insane was happening, but no one was able to explain the movement's origins, possibilities and meaning. Now, however, Charles Perry has written the definitive account of this phenomenon by virtue of prodigious research, historical perspective, period documents and scores of interviews. America's attitude toward the hippies ranged from joyful support to intense hatred, but one thing was certain: no one could ignore them. What had begun as a loose association of young people ~ their interests partly artistic, partly political, and largely good times ~ took on a remarkable momentum: it made a neighborhood its own, gained a name ("hippies" was coined by disapproving Beats), and commenced a social experiment based on grass, LSD, flamboyance and "love" that brought some 100,000 pilgrims to San Francisco in the summer of 1967, by which time the Be~Ins, Love~Ins and like events had attracted immediate national attention. But by 1968 it was all over, and the Haight soon became an urban nightmare run by vicious drug dealers and speed freaks. Eight years in the making, and including sixteen pages of rare period photographs, this book introduces us to the people who formed the otherwise anonymous "love generation": poets from Allen Ginsberg to Gary Snyder; gurus such as Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert; musicians from the corner flutist to the Grateful Dead; garden~variety hippies; the "diggers," the political consciousness of the Haight; dope dealers, featuring acid king Augustus Owsley Stanley III; journalists such as Hunter S. Thompson; novelist Ken Kesey and his band of Merry Pranksters; the Hell's Angels; groupies; and many others who were swept up in the intensity and euphoria of a period whose true effects and signilicance we are only now beginning to assess.
