About this title

Synopsis:

The author focuses on the figure of Kurt von Hammerstein-Equord (1878-1943), the General who took control of the army in 1930 and who retired after Hitler revealed his plans at a secret meeting in 1933. Hammersteins biography has ramifications and historical implications that surpass the borders of both the Reich and the Federal Republic. Through the Hammersteins family history, the author recounts the decisive motives and contradictions of the German case: from Hitlers political manoeuvres to Germanys vacillation between East and West; from the fall of the Weimar Republic to the failure of resistance, and from the communist utopias force of attraction to the end of the Cold War.
