About this Item

First Collected Edition of this standard early nineteenth century art text in three parts. 4to: [4],31,[1]; vi,[2],45,[1]; ix,[3],64pp, with 9 and 8 leaves of etched plates to parts I and II and 8 hand-colored etched plates to part III. Contemporary calf, covers framed in blind with triple fillet and small corner tool, spine neatly rebacked in six compartments between raised bands decorated in blind, with gilt lettering direct to compartments two and four, marbled end papers. Corners rounded, boards a little scuffed, uncolored plates and adjacent tissue guards in part I only moderately foxed (mostly to margins), but overall clean and crisp with the beautifully colored plates fresh and bright. Abbey (Life) 100. Lowndes I, 324. Graesse I, 578. Schimmelman 83 (first American edition, 1839). Each part originally published separately, in 1822, 1826 and 1827, with the first collected edition made up from the sheets of the second edition of Part 1 ("Practical hints on composition in painting") and the first editions of Parts 2 ("Practical hints on light and shade in painting"), and 3 ("Practical hints on colour in painting"), the whole connected with a general title issued in 1827. Our copy consists of parts 1 and 2 in second edition and part 3 in first edition. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition.
