About this Item

80 pp., plus 57 plates. Contemporary brown cloth, (publishers), spine gilt, original front and back wrappers bound in (front now detached). Bookplate and blindstamps of the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research. Rare. The last book printed at the pioneer San Francisco printing firm of Edward Bosqui before the fire of April 1906 destroyed their plant. "The plates were made by the Bosqui Engraving & Printing Co., but whether this concern also printed the letter press seems now to be unknown. Almost the entire edition was destroyed in the fire of 1906, and the book is now excessively rare," [Henry R. Wagner], "Edward Bosqui Imprints," in Memoirs of Edward Bosqui, Oakland: Holmes Book Company, 1952, p. 181. "In the Bosqui bindery at the time was her second book -- A Handbook of the Trees of California -- in process of publication as an 'Occasional Paper' of the California Academy of Sciences. At her own expense she had had five hundred specially bound copies prepared for her friends. A few had gone into the mail. All the rest, stacked on the floor by her desk, had been left to the flames" Wilson, Alice Eastwood's Wonderland. The Adventures of a Botanist, p. 97. William Boyce Thompson (1869 - 1930), mining speculator and philanthropist, would likely have been the recipient of one of those few mailed copies. Bookseller Inventory # 23031
