This SCARCE FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE (dated 1943, first published 1942) is in VERY GOOD+ condition especially at over 65 years old with VERY SCARCE hard stock GIFT CARD LAID IN. Tiny tome CONTAINS "The Hang of It", J.D. SALINGER'S FIRST HARDCOVER BOOK APPEARANCE. This small book features writings by Salinger, Elbert Hubbard, Ellery Queen, O' Henry, Rudyard Kipling among others, and cartoons by a plethora of artists. Book is in VERY GOOD+ condition with bright red, white and blue pictorial boards with front cover having cartoon of a soldier, sailor and marine with title in white and red shadowed bold lettering and subtitle in red on blue bottom half of cover, and bold red lettering on blue on book's spine. Book's binding and insides are NEAR FINE - tight, clean and unmarked. NO previous owner's or library markings and NO FOXING. This handsome collectible copy was a World War II era compilation of favorite stories, verse and cartoons for the entertainment of servicemen. It has the gift card with "Greetings from Bundles for America" and an illustration of soldiers receiving a big bundle with ribbons? all in red, white and blue with Bundles for America's New York address and bottom section "Thanks to: . a Mrs. Wintrop Dwight . New York." Book's spine tips and corners are gently bumped and lightly worn with cover art complete. There is mild rubbing and scuffing to front board near top corner, and rubbing and a few small spots (1/4" & 1" x 1/8") to back cover. Red, black & white pictorial endpapers have 4 different small cartoons to each page. Pages have typically yellowed with age as this war era publication had the low quality materials available used to produce this book - except over 70 bright white glossy pages (some yellowed around edges) with full color & b&w cartoons. Salinger's short story "The Hang of It", the last story in the book on page 332, marks his first book appearance in hardcover format. This was only his third short story published, appearing first in COLLIERS magazine, July 12, 1941, page 22. This is one of several short stories by Salinger published in the early 1940's before he served in World War II himself, having been drafted into the infantry, and later being involved in the invasion of Normandy. The irony is that this Kit Book contains a Salinger piece that was written before he later served his country himself. "THE KIT BOOK for Soldiers, Sailors and Marines", copyright 1943, hardcover, 4.5" x 6.25" x .75" thick, 336pp. Bookseller Inventory # 002622
