About this Item

Second issue (with 1943 rather 1942 copyright) of a World War II-era compilation containing Salinger's third published short story and first appearance in book form. Small 8vo; 336pp, with numerous color and black-and-white illustrations. Publisher's bright red, white and blue pictorial boards (issued without a dust jacket), in original pictorial shipping carton. Just about Near Fine, with rubbing and very minor loss of color to corners and tips and browning to wartime paper, in a better than Very Good example of shipping box (unused), reproducing cover image of the book, rubbed along all edges. Salinger's story, "The Hang of It," appears on p. 332 of this collection of "favorite stories, verse and cartoons for the entertainment of servicemen," also featuring contributions by Elbert Hubbard, Ellery Queen, O' Henry, Rudyard Kipling, Damon Runyan and Ernest Thayer's "Casey at the Bat." Not particularly uncommon, except in the shipping carton, very few of which have survived. Bookseller Inventory # BB0666
