Synopsis: Follows the life of the author of many well-known fairy tales, from his difficult youth in Denmark to his struggle to be recognized as a writer of plays, stories, and novels.

From School Library Journal: ea. vol: illus. photogs. reprods. chron. index. (People of Distinction Series). CIP. Childrens. May 1986. PLB $8.95. Grade 4-7 While neither of these books is particularly compelling or inspiring, Morrie Turner is the better of the two. It follows Turner from his childhood in Oakland, California, where "black boys don't be artists," through various discouragements and setbacks to his successful career as a syndicated cartoonist. Through the narrative and reprints of "Wee Pals," readers will realize how this gentle man used the quiet statement of cartooning to become a crusader for world brotherhood. Included are many black-and-white photographs and reproductions of Turner's cartoon strips. The biography of Andersen starts out well enough by interrelating Andersen's life with his imagination and his writings. What seems a worthy premise somehow loses focus in the succeeding chapters and becomes grounded in a recitation of Andersen's trials and struggles to attain recognition as a writer. Surely the truths and realities of Andersen's life and literary contributions deserve better. Pamela K. Bomboy, Chesterfield County Public Schools, Va.
