Firts edition. Hardcover in tan cloth lettered in dark brown. Photographic frontispiece of Russel standing in front of his military bi-plane "Kicking Mule"; x+212 pp. Illustrated with photographic plates. Handwritten personal letter from William's father Henry Russel, dated July 31, 1919, to the mother of another soldier who returned from the war, is affixed to the front free endpaper. Very good, spine moderately darkened and with a slight stain to the foot of the spine. Lower edge of the brear cover has narrow tidemarking which has extended to the rear blanks. No dust jacket. William Muir Russel, a graduate of Cornell, enlisted in April, 1917 in the American Air Serrvice for action in Europe in World War I. He was killed in action in August, 1918 after less than a month of duty at the front. This memorial volume is a collection of his letters home during the period of his training and deployment.
