About this title

Synopsis:

A six-year-old boy who wants to grow up fast learns a lesson about patience from his grandmother

From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Being six is hard, especially when your sister is ten. It means pinning the donkey's tail on its foot, not being allowed to drink milk right on the floor, and going to bed early. Still, being six has its compensations, as the winsome protagonist of this stream-of-consciousness narrative realizes. He can mix mudpies, play imaginary train games, and eat just as big a hamburger as anybody. Besides, as his grandmother tells him, it's hard to be any age, and the best approach is to "take time slow, and make life count, and pass love on." Hanna's full-page portraits of this biracial family are lovingly detailed, but her cool palette lends a rather drab feel to the backgrounds. Inspired by a comment made by the author's son, the book captures a common childhood concern. The manner is wordy, but the emotions ring true. --Anna DeWind, Milwaukee Public Library
