About this Item

Second Edition, third-issue (of four) binding. 8vo: 151pp (two errors occur in table of contents: pp 127 and 128 appear in reversed order). Publisher's sky blue paper-covered boards (copies were also bound in gray, green, and tan), black cloth spine with paper label printed in burgundy and black, top edge stained burgundy, title page printed in burgundy and black, ownership signature to front fly leaf, publisher's advertising announcement laid in, small Old Corner Book Store ticket tipped in; wanting the dust jacket. Small, trivial scuff to lower cover, paper label slightly tanned, else a bright, tight, fresh copy, apparently unread. Edelstein A1.b. Connolly 46. The 1931 reissue of this collection of poems by Stevens, nominally the second edition, but effectively nearly a new book, with addition of 14 poems (notably "Sea Surface Full of Clouds" and "Death of a Soldier") and omission of three from the first edition of 1923. "Harmonium was Wallace Stevens' first collection of poems, which he published at the age of forty-four. Despite being heavily influenced by English Romanticism and the French symbolists, the poems in the volume nevertheless represent a serious attempt to forge a distinctively American voice, an American vernacular for poetry both in themes and poetic diction. It collects poems of various metres, from the short, four-line 'To the Roaring Wind' to the long, six-section 'The Comedian as the Letter C', most of which had been already published between 1914 and 1923 in various magazines. Most of Stevens's often anthologised and celebrated poems belong to this collection [including Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird] . . . Not until publication of his collected poems (1954)-which contain the 1931 edition in its entirety, and whose working title was, notably, The Whole of Harmonium-did Stevens gain the currency he deserved."
