About this Item

Orange wraps. [32 pp] front matter & ads; [1 p.] blank; [1 p.] frontispiece "Fruits of Labor" by Diego Rivera; 256 pp.; [16 pp.] author bios, departments, & ads. ~~ Very good condition with minor wear at head/heel of spine, minor toning to text block, no cover tears, interior pages unmarked. ~~ This vintage issue of Harper's Magazine is notable for the first appearance of Part 2 of the short story "Gal Young Un" by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. (Part 1 appears in the June 1932 issue, No, 986, also for sale in a separate listing.) After being turned down by Scribner's Magazine, it was accepted by Harper's and went on to win the 1933 O. Henry Memorial Prize. [See Tarr, C 594]. The story is about a wealthy widow living in backcountry Florida during the Prohibition who is courted by an untrustworthy bootlegger. Together with the June issue this is a nice item for collectors of Rawlings literature and/or literature of Florida. Also appearing in this issue is a beautiful and thoughtful essay about growing old, titled "The Path to the River" by Anonymous--now known to be the journalist/social critic Albert Jay Nock (1870-1945).
