About this Item

Original, complete disbound issue that shows slight wear at the spine and fading, o/w fine containing 3 stark political cartoons by Thomas Nast. The first is a cover illustration captioned "'Still hunt'--ing. The End of the Saratoga Fox-Hunt--A Tale of Reform." It shows a man on a hobby-horse supposedly leading a reform, mocking the so-called reform of the Democratic party attempted by Tilden. Another full-page cartoon by Nast shows the same man (the name J. Morrissey is written on his hat) standing in the background watching a brute in checkered pants and vest appearing ready to swing a crushing blow but not at the little gentleman (Morrissey again) who holds the brute's coat. The caption reads, "Putting a head on" and again related to Tilden's weak attempts to reform the Democratic party with "before reform" and "after reform" pictures of the same brute on the wall (not much difference, just in dress).Third cartoon (about 1/3rd of a page) showing "The Tammany Democratic Tiger" and "The Repudiation Democratic Tiger." Also, illustrated piece, "Good Stories of Man and Other Animals" by Charles Reade. Bookseller Inventory # T611
