About this Item

276 pages. Hardcover with dustjacket. Good condition. Dustjacket is worn. BIBLIOGRAPHY. Many distinguished scholars and critics are in substantial agreement that Hart Crane is one of the most important American poets of the first half of the twentieth century, ranking along with T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens, and Robert Frost. His poetry remains, however, among the most puzzling written in our time. It is not uncommon, for instance, for critics to refer to THE BRIDGE as a magnificent failure and yet to evaluate it as one of the notable achievements in the long poem in the twentieth century. While it is true that the academic world was slow to grant Crane major status, it is just as true that, by and large, he was well-served by the critics who took him seriously. His suicide at the age of thirty-two was a tragic curtailment of brilliant career. Professor Schwartz has included in his bibliography not only the books and articles exclusively about Crane, but also those which make only brief or passing references to Crane or his work. This is the first annotated critical bibliography of Hart Crane. The appendix is a chronological index of all works about Crane arranged by year of publication. This important bibliographical work should be of great use to student and scholar. (Key Words: Hart Crane, Joseph Schwartz, Literary Studies, Literary Criticism, American Poets, Bibliography).
