About this title

Inspired by Walker Evans's classic Havana 1933 series, renowned Spanish photographer Alberto Schommer turns his lens to the resilient beauty of Cuba and its people in this exquisite volume

These images, moving and vibrant yet sweetly fragile, were taken during four short trips in 1994 in which Schommer immersed himself in this seductive capital, taking over 3,000 pictures and then carefully choosing these 140 images. Printed in sumptuous four-color black and white, Havana shows a city at times majestic, at times decayed but always magnificent. From the famed Floridita bar, birthplace of the daiquiri and a haunt of Hemingway's, to the sultry sands of its famed beaches; from the decaying majesty of its splendid architecture to the remarkable spirit of its people--all are stunningly captured by Schommer's discerning eye.

About the Author:

Alberto Schommer was born in Spain, of Spanish and German heritage. His work has been widely exhibited and collected and has appeared in over thirty books on photography.
