About this title

Synopsis:

Hawaii's Humpback Whales is an informative and richly illustrated description of the humpback whale and its behavior. This book is unique in providing the opportunity to learn about one species of whale in sufficient degree to recognize its behaviors and displays, and perhaps even interpret the significance of many of them. This fine volue includes a behavior "key" describing activities and the contexts in which they occur; detailed information on where and how to watch for whales; regulations govering human activity in the vicinity of whales; what to do in case of a stranding; and a discussion of the future management and conservation of humpback whale populations.

In 1975, he came to Hawai i, the primary mating and calving area for humpback whales in the North Pacific and began some of the first field studies of the behavior of live whales. He has served on the Hawaiian Island Humpback National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Committee, a contributing scientist to the Southern Ocean Research Partnership, co-led the United Nations Environmental Programme's Regional Workshop on Marine Mammal Watching in the Wider Caribbean Region and is a contributing advisor to the International Whaling Commission s Five Year Strategic Plan for Whalewatching 2011 2016.
