About this Item

HENLEY, W[illiam] E[rnest]. Hawthorn and Lavender. Songs and Madrigals. Original unbound sheets. London: William Heinemann, 1899. First edition of the first part printed for private circulation. The text consists of sections I-XXIII of the poem; there are many differences from the text published in the North American Review, 1899, and from the completed book published by David Nutt later in 1901. Ashley 874 lists Gosse's copy with an inscription by Gosse dated October 31st, 1899, "Only six copies exist. Heinemann kept one, the author one, Pawling one, two have been sent to "The North American Review", and I have the sixth. . It was printed last week." Michael Sadleir in "Some Uncollected Authors X: W. E. Henley," (The Book Collector, 1956) notes "In August 1899 a few copies were printed for private circulation of a single sheet folded to form 16 pp. carrying ten of the poems later included in the regular edition of Hawthorn and Lavender." Sadleir seems to have based this on the Gosse copy now in the British Library. Colbeck in A Bookman's Catalogue, Vol. I, p. 368, gives a brief note on the BL copy, "the only one known to me." One or two light spots on front leaf, else a near fine copy of this rarity. Bookseller Inventory # 54542
