Forster, her father s cousin and portrait painter to a number of Canadian prime ministers. Travelling to Paris at the turn of the century, there Caroline continued her studies at the Academie Julian, where she met fellow student Frank Armington. Marrying shortly after, the couple spent the majority of their artistic careers in Paris, from where Caroline traveled extensively throughout Europe and produced etchings such as this. She is celebrated today for her attention to architectural detail as well as for her unique ability to capture the effects of sunlight in her work. During her career, she managed to make 557 etchings and drypoints, many of which she gave as gifts to esteemed museums and galleries in Europe and North America. Today, her etchings can be found in many Canadian and international public and private collections, including the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), the Victoria & Albert Museum (London, England), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York).
