About this Item

The text of the first Folio, edited and amended where obscure, by Herbert Farjeon. Illustrated from drawings by Vera Willoughby. New York: Limited Editions Club, 1940. Folio, hardcover, cloth-backed decorative boards. 99 pages. Designed by Bruce Rogers and printed at the press of A. Colish, in a limited edition of 1,950 copies. A small tidy name in ink on front endleaf. Slight bump to one corner. Spine a little dull. A very good copy overall, entirely unopened. An odd volume from the thirty-seven volume edition, each volume featuring the work of a different illustrator. This volume features a beautiful series of drawings by Vera Willoughby (1870-1930), a Hungarian-born artist who studied at the Slade. A watercolor painter, costume and poster designer, in the 1920s and 1930s she illustrated and decorated a number of books, for which she received immediate recognition. Houfe writes that "her work is inspired by 18th-century decoration, transformed by incipient art deco into pretty but stiff fantasies. Some of her pencil work is pleasantly cubist in feeling.her figures wear the clothes of their year and country, but they live beneath them and are not merely lay figures exhibiting scraps of information culled from well-known works of reference." (Alan Horne: Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators). Bookseller Inventory # 6201
