About this title

Herbert Lawrence Block, commonly known as Herblock (1909 - 2001), was an American editorial cartoonist and author best known for his commentaries on national domestic and foreign policy. During the course of a career stretching into nine decades, he won three Pulitzer Prizes for editorial cartooning (1942, 1954, 1979), shared a fourth Pulitzer Prize in 1973 for Public Service on Watergate, the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1994), the National Cartoonist Society Editorial Cartoon Award in 1957 and 1960, the Reuben Award in 1956, the Gold Key Award (the National Cartoonists Society Hall of Fame) in 1979, and numerous other honors. In wise and witty words, and with a pen that gave the most abstract issues a vividly human face, Herblock deflated the most overblown personages and drew a line between good and evil that cut through all bombast and propaganda. As renowned historian Bruce Catton said, "Herblock is one of the most crusted conservatives America. He believes in things like democracy, freedom, honesty, fair dealing, justice and elementary decency ....and he is outraged when important people who out to believe in these things give them lip service but actually work to destroy them. Since this happens over and over again, both in and out of government, Herblock is indignant most of the time; and since he speaks out eloquently and with powerful effect, he keeps all of us in his debt." With this collection of his cartoons that were syndicated in over 200 papers, Herblock shows why he was one of our most valuable nation resources
