He graduated from Hernando High School, earned his bachelor's degree from Morris Brown College and his master's degree from Clark Atlanta University, and has been employed at Pasco- Hernando Community College for the past 18 years. He is married to Angela Lewis and they have three children: Jared (15), Gared (15), and Salim (11).
