About this Item

8vo. xxxii, 422 pp. Frontispiece portrait of Herodotus by Medardus Thoenert (1754-1814). Quarter modern green cloth tape (over spine) with contemporary paper-backed boards, white holograph spine title; worn, front hinge cracked. Holograph biographies of Herodotus and Reiz at front pastedown and free end-paper, signed "Dietterich 1816." Hartford Theological Seminary blind-stamps. Good. The "critical talents of Reizius" are evident in this presentation of Herodotus (QR, p. 360). "Besides the Greek text, he proposed to give an entire new Latin version, improved chronological tables, and maps illustrative of the geography of Herodotus. The third volume was to contain his notes, and a Lexicon Herodoteum, which, he assures us, should be more full and compendious than the Ionic Lexicon of Aemilius Portus. "It is a subject of deep concern that this fair and ample promise was so untimely frustrated by the death of the learned editor, who only published the first four books of Herodotus" (QR, p. 360). The work was continued by Gottfried Heinrich Schafer. REFERENCES: Quarterly Review, Vol. II, London: John Murray, 1809. Bookseller Inventory # LV1867
