Catalog and indexes at rear. In black letter German. // Concubinage -- Europe. Common law marriage -- Europe. Marriage law of early 18th century Germany. // Thomasius was a leading German author, historian, jurist and philosopher of his time. A progressive thinker, he promoted the use of German over Latin and argued that bigamy was natural. He was also an opponent of the persecution of "witches" and the use of turture. An Enlightenment thinker. Dramatic frontispiece woodcut illustration depicts what appears to be a man with two wives, each with a child. One wife stands in the doorway, the other is leaving with a loaf of bread. Ex-libris of Bibliotheca Boytzenburgensis, with minimal markings (small circular stamp top front past-down, front board, title page; a few small hand-written accesion numbers(?) to paste-downs.
