Stephen E Aldrich came to the Southwest in 1870 with the Army He was so taken with the area that he stayed after his discharge in 1880 He established the Manuelito trading Post in 1882 and others over the next few years He was the first white man to build a house in Gallup which was in the then Territory of New Mexico He became in involved in politics both in the State Legislature and in the McKinley County Government He was a part of the delegation to Washington to establish New Mexico Statehood in 1908 Few men of that era traveled or knew more about the land and its peoples

Shirley Aldrich Bradley and Adeline Aldrich Bradley collaborated on this book. Through their memories and pictures they have brought their beloved Grandfather to life. Shirley lives in Arizona and Adeline lives in California.
