Synopsis: Fascinating and scholarly history of the Hijaz (Hejaz) Railroad, a narrow gauge line built by the Ottomans and the Germans to link Istanbul (Constantinople) with Hejaz and Mecca, although it ultimately only reached Medina. Beset by attacks from local tribes, Lawrence of Arabia, floods, landslides and other obstacles, the railroad only survives in parts. Based on hitherto unavailable Turkish documents. Illustrated with a map and a handful of photos from the Sultan's personal collection. 168 pages.
