First edition of Vertot?s important work on the Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem (Ordo Fratrum Hospitalis Sancti Ioannis Hierosolymitani), commonly known as the Knights Hospitaller and later Knights of Rhodes and Knights of Malta. It was also published in an 8vo edition the same year and reprinted several times. A German edition was published in 1728, translated Justus Christoph Dithmer. The Abbé and French historian Réne-Auber Vertot (1655-1735) started with two succesful works, on Portugese history, ?Histoire de la conjuration de Portugal?, and on Swedish history, ?Histoire des révolutions de Suède? (1695) respectively. He was made a member of the Académie des inscriptions in 1703 and beside contributions to the Mémoires of the Académie and other minor works he wrote ?Révolutions romains? (1719) and finally his main work ?Histoire des chevaliers hospitaliers de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem? The work display an heroic struggle between the Christians, led by the frenchmen, and the Infidels. The papacy however was treated with no respect and it was immidiately condemned by the Order of Malta and put on the Index in Rome of forbidden books in 1728. Seller Inventory # 63265
