About this Item

Pp. (1-6), 1-779 + i-vii, 1-208, (2, contents, figures); 422 plates and maps (176 are chromolithograph or color-printed plates of birds or eggs by Kuelemans, Huet, Faguet and Dongó, 236 are color-tinted sepia or plain plates of bird osteology and anatomy after Terrier, Gelibert and Louveau, 1 full page color map of Madagascar, 9 are text-figure maps of Madagascar). Recent brown half-morocco leather, spine with 5 raised bands lettered in gilt on tan, maroon and black spine labels in three compartments, over French marbled boards with matching French marbled endpapers, (original printed gray or green wrappers bound in at the rear of each volume), sm folio (12 3/4 x 9 1/2 inches). The set comprises volumes 12-15 + supplement of the series 'Histoire Physique, Naturelle et Politique de Madagascar.' Zimmer (p. 265) calls this work "A thorough monograph on the birds of Madagascar, forming part of the general work on the island." This work was originally issued in seven parts over a ten year period; the supplement was issued much later in 1937. The three parts of the text were published in 1879, 1882 and 1885. According to the title pages, the three atlases of color plates were issued in 1878, 1879 and 1881. However, Zimmer (p. 265) states that part 1 of the first atlas volume was published in 1876 though the title page and front wrapper of that atlas volume bears the date 1878. The text and color plates of the supplement bear the date of 1937. All half-titles for the five volumes are present but note that the title-page for first atlas volume is extracted from the volume on mammals and corrected in manuscript to uniformity with the other title-pages; the original printed wrapper at the end of the first Atlas bears the correct title and date. This set is seldom offered complete with the supplement volume. It is even more unusual to find the set uniformly bound in attractive, period-style, half morocco. See also Fine Bird Books (1990) 102, Wood 366, Nissen IVB 385, Nissen ZBI 1676 and Ronsil 2037. The page edges of some volumes show light scattered foxing, the original wrappers and the half titles of the set also show light foxing; the entire text and fine color plates are very bright and clean; only a few plates show some light marginal foxing or offsetting. Three sepia plates are lightly age-toned; a remarkably clean set in near fine condition in an attractive period binding. Bookseller Inventory # 5500
